Alumina
Aluminium oxide refined from bauxite by the Bayer process and fed to the smelter. An internationally traded commodity in its own right, and the point in the aluminium chain where the emissions profile inverts: unlike the electricity-dominated smelter, a refinery’s own footprint is mostly fuel burned to raise digestion steam and to calcine the hydrate.
