A large share of a nitrogen fertilizer’s life-cycle impact is N2O released after sale, when the product is spread on soil (dnt-emi-src:FertilizerApplication). That damage belongs to the farm’s boundary, not the plant’s, and is not carried by the product’s cradle-to-gate emission factor.
