Hydrogen Production
Process CO2 from making hydrogen by steam methane reforming (SMR) or autothermal reforming of natural gas: the feedstock carbon is released when CH4 + 2 H2O → CO2 + 4 H2 (reforming plus the water-gas shift). Roughly two-thirds of the gas at an SMR plant is feedstock and one-third is fired to drive the endothermic reforming — that combustion is dnt-emi-src:IndustrialFurnaces, not counted here. Electrolytic (“green”) hydrogen has no process CO2; its footprint is the Scope 2 electricity of the electrolyser.
