Nitric Acid Production
By-product N2O from the catalytic oxidation of ammonia over platinum-rhodium gauze, the first step of the Ostwald process that makes the nitric acid used for ammonium nitrate, UAN and other nitrogen fertilizers. The gas is N2O rather than CO2, on the order of 5-9 kg per tonne of acid on an unabated plant at a GWP near 273, which makes it the dominant direct source at a fertilizer complex once bought-in ammonia is set aside. Secondary (in-burner) and tertiary (tail-gas) catalysts destroy most of it, and that abatement is what a low-carbon fertilizer certificate certifies.
