Petrochemical Steam Cracking
Process and combustion CO2 from thermally cracking naphtha, ethane, propane or gas oil into olefins and aromatics. The pyrolysis furnaces run near 850 C and much of the cracked stream is methane-rich fuel gas burned on site, so combustion dominates the roughly 1-1.5 t CO2 per tonne of high-value chemical; decoking and venting add a smaller process component. Covers the whole co-product slate — ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, xylenes — because a cracker’s emissions cannot be attributed to one of them.
